Though Pit Bulls have been on the receiving end of some bad publicity over the years, the blame for their bad behavior really belongs with the owners. Pit Bulls were very popular at one time, Spot from the Little Rascals was a Pit Bull. If you are considering a new family dog, don’t overlook the Pit Bull as a possibility because of a few bad owners. Here are some tips and information to give you a clearer idea of what you can expect from one of these sweet animals.

The American Pit Bull is a mix between the Bull and Terrier breeds. It is categorized by a stocky, muscular body and considered part of the Mastiff group. They have short, glossy and thick coats which have been bred for various color patterns. The typical adult American Pit Bull weighs about 55 pounds and will reach 22 inches in height. They are a generally healthy breed although they are sometimes prone to hip dysplasia, fleas, and dog ticks, and have been known to develop allergies to grass. They live an average of 12 years.

American Pit Bulls are gentle dogs! Most of the dogs who have been in the news for their violent behavior have been mixed breeds. When raised in a loving environment they grow into dogs who are great with children. American Pit Bulls can be somewhat aggressive towards other animals, but this occurs only when they are not well socialized as puppies. When raised correctly, the breed is loyal, obedient and very affectionate. As with any other breed, when brought up with love, Pit Bulls are great pets.

It is a good idea to get your Pit Bull while it is a puppy to guarantee a positive temperament. These dogs make exceptional pets and great companions for your family. They make protective guardians when well trained. This is an active breed and American Pit Bulls love to run. If you have an apartment or small yard they will be content as long as the owner gives them plenty of play and exercise time. They will need to be properly leashed and trained when in public because they are high energy animals.

Remember that it is the responsibility of the owner to make sure that their animal companion is properly trained and the American Pit Bull breed is no exception. If you raise them poorly, any animal will become a danger. If you don’t take responsibility for your animal, you will lose it forever.
